Scorpions have a been a powerful symbol in jewellery for millennia. In many ancient cultures — particularly Egyptian — the scorpion was a powerful protective symbol. The goddess Serqet (Selket), depicted with a scorpion, was a guardian against venomous creatures and harmful forces. The scorpion’s formidable sting and defensive nature made it a symbol of strength, resilience, and the ability to survive threats. This was especially appealing to those seeking to project or invoke inner fortitude. In some contexts, especially during the late Victorian and Art Nouveau periods (late 19th–early 20th century), the scorpion’s dangerous allure was associated with passion, erotic power, and the femme fatale archetype. Jewellery featuring scorpions could evoke this subtle sensuality. Victorian and later esoteric jewellery sometimes used scorpions to symbolise hidden knowledge, death, rebirth, or transformation — echoing Scorpio’s astrological connection to themes of life, death, and regeneration.
