This extraordinary cameo of sardonyx shell from the late-Georgian/early-Victorian era (early 1800s) is a breathtaking example of high cameo art depicting the myth of Hebe and Zeus as an Eagle. The exquisitely carved cameo is within an ornately scrolled cannetille 15k gold setting.
A true one-of-a-kind collector’s piece.

In Greek mythology, Hebe (Roman goddess Juventas) was the youngest of the gods and the one responsible for keeping them eternally young. Hebe was a remarkably popular subject in art in the period from about 1750 to 1880. In art, she was typically depicted with her father in the guise of an eagle and was thus exalted as an image of daughterly devotion.
Cannetille was a form of jewelry making popular during a very short time in the 1820s – 1830s (late Georgian era). It is considered to be related to filigree, but differs from filigree in as much as cannetille is three dimensional and filigree is flat. Specifically, cannetille was created with curled, twisted, spiraled, scrolled, beehived or coiled wire, usually in gold. The word ‘cannetille’ is also used to describe a type of French embroidery method which has a similar appearance and technique and is created using gold thread. It appears that this is where cannetille jewelry might well have found its inspiration.
