An exquisite antique French brooch from the mid-1800s featuring a regal gold-filled bow, star and floral setting surrounding an onyx cabochon inlaid with a gold and seed pearl flourish. Though the gold tests as gold-filled, it is in impeccable condition without a trace of loss or tarnish to the finish. Exceptional craftsmanship.
C-clasp.
Bow motifs have long been a cherished design in the history of jewelry, ranging from simple to elaborate styles. For centuries, renowned jewelers and prestigious jewelry houses have incorporated bows into nearly all of their collections, with stylistic elements that reflect the eras and social contexts of their time. In the 18th century, during Louis XIV’s reign in France, bow brooches played a role in "ribbon language" to signal one's marital status. These delicate metal and diamond bow brooches, known as Sévignés, were named after the Marquise de Sévigné, whose famous writings described women using bow brooches and necklaces to convey romantic messages. A bow worn over the heart signified a woman was in love, a bow hanging around the neck indicated she was between loves, and a bow on the décolletage invited new suitors.
