This glowing, one-of-a-kind brooch features a hand-painted reverse-glass image of an 18th-century lady in a flowing gown within an elegant solid sterling silver setting. The shimmering blue of her dress is created using the iridescent wing of a Morpho butterfly, placed beneath the glass. The background also shows wing shimmer, especially in the sky and landscape areas, giving the whole scene a luminous, almost magical effect. This technique—painting on the reverse side of glass, then backing it with butterfly wings—was a hallmark of the era and made each piece unique.

In the early 1900s, Thomas L. Mott was a British jeweler and manufacturer based in Birmingham, a major center for jewelry production. After World War I, exotic materials and Art Deco styling became fashionable. Mott began experimenting with butterfly wing inlay. In 1924, his butterfly wing jewelry gained wide attention at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, where he showcased shimmering tropical-themed brooches and pendants. Demand surged internationally. Throughout the 1920s until 1940, Mott produces these pieces, often featuring ladies in period dress, English cottages, and tropical palms and sunsets.

Sourced in London and curated by Paris-based Vivienne Birt for Chateau Love, this brooch embodies the timeless sophistication and meticulous artistry that defines our carefully selected chateau-worthy collection of luxurious antique and vintage jewelry.
